(06/21/11) Elizabeth A. (Davis) Kelly, 87, of Boston Neck Road, North Kingstown, died peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on Monday, June 20, 2011. Born in Cranston, she was a daughter of the late Charles E. Davis, Sr. and Elizabeth (Sloan) Davis. She was the wife of the late David V. Kelly. Betty was a Homemaker who enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She loved laughter, music, dancing, the ocean, and all things beautiful. She was a voracious reader of the daily newspaper, retaining a sharp and insightful understanding of global events well into her golden years. Her compassionate understanding of people made her a valuable friend. The greatest love of her life was her family. We will all miss the evenings spent at her home where we laughed, talked and listened to her picking out Sinatra tunes on the piano. She will be greatly missed. Betty was a communicant of St. Bernard Church, member of the Belles of Beechwood, the Red Hat Society, and volunteered with the Women\'s Guild of the North Kingstown United Methodist Church. She leaves her three children: Elizabeth A. Leaper and her husband Jeff of Waterford, CT, Mary E. Morrissey of Saunderstown, and David C. Kelly of North Kingstown. Cherished grandmother of Vanessa E. Dunlop of Saunderstown, Kaitlin K. Morrissey of Phoenix, AZ, Elisabeth K. Morrissey of Providence, and great-grandmother to Riley Dunlop and Sadie Mae Nichols. She was the sister of the late Charles E. Davis, Jr. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, June 25, 2011 at 9:00 am in St. Bernard Church, 415 Tower Hill Road, Wickford. (06/24/11) SHERMAN, Paul E., 84, of Stony Lane, North Kingstown, died peacefully on Thursday, June 23, 2011 at South County Hospital. A life-long resident of North Kingstown, he was a son of the late George H. Sherman and Hazel L. (Seavey) Sherman. He was the loving husband of Claire (Rogers) Sherman. Mr. Sherman was in the building business for thirty five years and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War in the U.S. sector of Germany during the Cold War. . He was a communicant of St. Bernard Church. Paul was a devoted husband, father, and friend who was always kind and giving to others. He has left us all with many loving memories. Besides his wife, he leaves his four children: Katherine E. Sherman and her partner Jennifer Ramin of Tucson, AZ, Cheryl A. Edwards and her husband Lance of Exeter, Gail L. Cunningham and her husband David of Exeter, and Steven O. Sherman, Sr. and his wife Ella of North Kingstown. He was the loving grandfather of Carrie Pennington, Gregory Edwards, Jeremy Edwards, Christopher Cunningham, Amy Gail Cunningham, Steven O. Sherman, Jr., Philip A. Sherman, Amiee Lynn Sherman, and great-grandfather of Mike Jackson and J. Dalton Pennington. He was the great-grandfather of the late Allison P. Pennington and brother of the late Newton S. Sherman, Sr., Dora A. Tucker, and Warren G. Sherman. He also leaves many nieces and nephews. (06/29/11) Ruth M. (Thomas) Gronneberg-Tomlin, 91, died Tuesday, June 28, 2011 in the South County Hospital, Wakefield, RI. She was the wife of Edward Gronneberg and the late Hollier G. Tomlin. Mrs. Gronneberg died while attempting to recover from serious injuries she suffered at the Kingston railroad station on June 17, 2011, when a Boston-bound Acela express train sped past the platform. “She will be missed in all of the many places she lived and is still remembered”, said her son David Tomlin. “She radiated joy, warmth, modesty and goodness. Her smile and the sound of her voice, often raised in a song, made her a welcomed presence wherever she went.” Born in Summit, NJ on November 1, 1919, the youngest of four children of Walter and Ida Mae (Houghton) Thomas, where her father worked on Wall Street and later became a traveling salesman in New England. The family settled in Providence, where Mrs. Gronneberg graduated from Classical High School and the Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School. She attended Calvary Baptist Church in Providence where she met and later married Hollier G. Tomlin, son of Calvary’s Pastor, the Rev. Earl Hollier Tomlin. The couple moved to FL, where Mr. Tomlin was in flight training with the U.S. Navy, and continued to move throughout the next 14 years until he left the Navy in 1955 to enter seminary in preparation to become an Episcopal minister. He served churches in Corpus Christi and San Antonio, TX where he died in 1989. Ten years later, Mrs. Gronneberg married Ed Gronneberg, a Rhode Island native and lifelong resident who owned and operated real estate and insurance businesses in Cranston. The two had known each other well for many years. Mr. Gronneberg was married to Hollier Tomlin’s sister Bonnie until her death in 1996 and the two couple had been close friends. Following their marriage in 1999, they divided their time for many years between homes in San Antonio and South County, Rhode Island. Mrs. Gronneberg remained active in church affairs, serving on the vestry of her church in San Antonio and continuing her volunteer work in Sunday school and other church programs. In recent years the Gronneberg’s settled permanently at Brightview Commons in Wakefield. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son David Tomlin of New York, N. Y., stepdaughters; Linda Gaulin of West Greenwich, R. I.; Kathy Pazera of Jamestown, R. I.; Andrea Richardson of Narragansett, R. I.; Bonnie Harbourt of Roanoke, VA; three grandchildren; eleven step-grandchildren; one great grandchild and one step-great grandchild. Memorial services will be held at the Church of the Ascension, 370 Main Street, Wakefield, R. I., Saturday, July 2, 2011 at 10 am. (07/06/11) George W. Valentine, M.D., 81, of Center Road, Block Island, passed away Saturday evening, July 2, 2011 at home. He was the husband of Jean Ann (Holm) Valentine, they had been married for 60 years. Born in Waterbury, CT, a son of the late Earl and Laura (Knollmeyer) Valentine. He resided in Cheshire, CT before becoming a resident of Block Island in 1985. Dr. Valentine served as chair of the Anestheology Department at St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury, CT and was an anesthesiologist at Waterbury Hospital. He was a graduate of Yale University, served his internship at Waterbury Hospital and his residency at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, CT. He was a Captain with US Air Force serving in France, past president of the Connecticut Society of Anesthesiologists, founder of the Waterbury Extended Care Facility, former member of the Block Island Medical Board and Zoning Board. He was awarded a two year scholarship at St. George’s School in Middletown, RI when he attained the rank of Eagle Scout. Besides his wife he leaves two daughters, Patricia Valentine Twickler of Brandford, CT and Sheryl Valentine of Mashpee, MA; three sons, James H. Valentine of Southbury, CT, George F. Valentine of Jamestown, RI and Robert W. Valentine of Essex, VT. and ten grandchildren. He was the father of the late George W. Pucci, Sr. in 2009. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marion B. (Faklaris) Inserra of Westerly. He was the loving father of Richard and Margaret Inserra of Ridgefield, CT, Russell and Jill Inserra of Houston, TX, Christopher and Felicia Inserra of Ridgefield, CT, Mary-Jo and Wayne DePena of Annandale, NJ, Elizabeth and Byron Gray of New Rochelle, NY, Mark and Judith Inserra of Joliet, IL, Paul and Marie Inserra of Cary, NC, Jeanne and Bill Lalli of Hawthorne, NY, Reverend John Inserra of the Bridgeport Diocese, Kathryn and Frank Gilligan of White Salmon, WA and Dr. Michelle Inserra of Mountain View, CA. He was the loving grandfather of 21 and great-grandfather of 8 and uncle to many nieces and nephews. Mr. Inserra was born in New York City, NY on March 3, 1926, the son of the late Ignatius and Francis (Lombardo) Inserra. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Navy. After the war, Russ became a social worker in New York City working for the YMCA, Boys Clubs, settlement houses and an adoption center. He was responsible for managing two boys clubs in the Bronx. When he retired to Westerly he worked for 6 years as a director of senior activities at the COMO in Stonington. He was a Westerly Hospital volunteer for 15 years as well as a Eucharistic Minister at the Immaculate Conception Church of Westerly. Russ was a marriage prep member, a St. Vincent de Paul Society member, a driver for meals on wheels and a 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. (07/15/11) Robert John Mudge, 51, of Punta Gorda, Florida, died unexpectedly, Tuesday, June 14, 2011. He was the son of William C. and Carol (Perry) Mudge of North Kingstown. Bob made his living as a boat and auto mechanic. As a youth, he was a resident of North Kingstown and Jamestown. For the last 25 years, Bob made his home in Punta Gorda. In addition to his parents, Bob is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert L. and Stacey Cahoon, a grandson, Noah R. Cahoon, a sister, Suzanne Zile and her children, Melanie and William Zile, Grandmothers, Rita C. Perry and Mildred Mudge, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Growing up, Bob delighted in nature, collecting reptiles and building elaborate underground forts. The 5 foot black racer will always live in family folklore as it resided preserved in the basement. As an adult, he enjoyed the company of friends, whether camping, boating, or fishing. Rest in peace, Bob. A private service will be held at a later date. (07/15/11) Rita C. (Cormier) Perry, 91, of North Kingstown, died peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, July 13, 2011 at Kent Regency. Born in Providence, she was a daughter of the late Dillon Cormier and Bridget (Connell) Cormier. She was the wife of the late Sen. Charles A. Perry, Jr. Rita was very involved with family, friends, and community. Until the age of 85, she and her daughter, Pat, ran a slipcover and drapery business which earned a \"Best in Rhode Island\" Award. As a talented seamstress and milliner, she designed and created many wedding gowns, hats, and matching outfits. Rita was proud to announce that she had done work for Doris Duke and even met the butler. She also volunteered with the Girl Scouts, the Jamestown Drum and Bugle Corps, the PTA, the NK Recreation Department and the NK Republican Town Committee. Rita was the beloved mother of 4 daughters, Carol A. (William) Mudge, Patricia E. (Alfred) Miranda, Christine E. (Carlton) Arruda, all of North Kingstown, and Linda E. ( Richard) Kokla of Coventry. Much loved grandmother of Suzanne Zile, Melissa Rembijas, Pamela Rogers, Kevin Perry, David Miranda, and Ryan Arruda. Great-grandmother of thirteen, and great, great-grandmother of three. Three grandsons, Richard Rembijas, Robert Rembijas, and Robert Mudge predeceased her. Rita, the youngest of ten children, was also predeceased by her siblings, Agnes Tata, Madeline Cunningham, Carmelita Szlatenyi, Gladys Laycock, and Ernest, Earl, Joseph, Raymond, and Edward Cormier. Rita will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Her generous spirit and compassion were her life\'s passion. Her spunk and energy were contagious. (07/15/11) C. Hamilton Webb, 81, of Winsor Avenue, died suddenly at home on Thursday, July 7, 2011. Born in London, England, he was a son of the late Theodore Webb and Doris (Wilson) Webb. He was the loving husband of Ann T. (Scanlon) Webb. The two were married for 25 years. Mr. Webb owned and operated C. Hamilton Webb Clock Repair for many years and was the Classical Music Director for WRIU Radio Station. He was a member of the New England Wireless and Steam Museum of East Greenwich, the Marine Modelers Club of New England, an antique engine exhibitor at Mystic Seaport, and attended St. Paul\'s Episcopal Church, Wickford. An avid boater, Mr. Webb lived on his own yacht for 12 years in Wickford Harbor and had his Sea Captains License. Besides his wife, he leaves his daughter, Donna Marie Webb of West Warwick and three step-children: Chuck W. Rejto and his wife Lisa of Riverside, Michael J. Rejto of Barrington, and Elizabeth A. Shaw and her husband Eric of Wakefield. He was the grandfather of Sarah E. Shaw of Wakefield, Katherine J. Rejto of Riverside, and Laura Rejto of Riverside. (Goughnour) Vitko of Mineral Point, PA. She was the companion of the late Ralph DeCiantis, III. Millie was a vibrant and strong woman who faced more than her share of life\'s challenges with determination and a zest for life, who overcame the odds to love and laugh and experience life to its fullest with her family and friends. She enjoyed gardening, crafts, NASCAR, football, and her beloved birds. She leaves her two children: Terri L. MacLean and her husband Gavin of Cranston and William D. Leigh of Altoona, PA. She was the grandmother of Jasmine N. Leigh of Narragansett. Cherished sister of John A. Vitko and his wife Jill of North Kingstown, Susan V.J. Smith and her husband Frank of Shallotte, NC, Lenny E. (07/15/11) Wayne E. Matteson, 68, of North Kingstown, died peacefully on Thursday, June 16, 2011 at South Kingstown Nursing & Rehabilitation Center surrounded by his loving family. A life-long resident of North Kingstown, he was a son of the late Lawrence M. Matteson and Bernice V. (Eldred) Matteson. Mr. Matteson was the proprietor of Wayne\'s Farm Fresh Vegetables on West Allenton Road for many years and was employed by Tuckahoe Turf Farm. He was a talented musician who enjoyed singing and playing the guitar. He was a volunteer for the Slocum Fire Department. He leaves his three children: Rhonda L. Shemanski and her husband Scott of Warwick, Wanda D. Carpenter of North Kingstown, and Wayne F. Matteson of North Kingstown. He was the grandfather of Ryan and Stephanie and brother of the late Lawrence M. Matteson and Frederick Matteson. A private graveside service was held in Elm Grove Cemetery, Wickford. (07/21/11) Devine, Jerald L., 56, passed away on July 21, 2011. He was the husband of Anne M. (LaChance) Devine of North Kingstown for 28 years. Born in Hartford, CT, he was the son of the late Jack and Dorothy Devine. Mr. Devine was owner of Ident-a-Kid, a children’s identification company, which served all of Rhode Island and Southern Massachusetts. Prior to working at Ident-a-Kid, he spent nearly 30 years working in the newspaper industry for the Hartford (CT) Times, the Berkshire (MA) Eagle, the Torrington (CT) Register, and the Newport (RI) Daily News. He attended Bulkeley High School and has been a North Kingstown resident for over 20 years. Jerald coached recreation softball, AAU girls and boys basketball. He was an avid New England Sports fan which included the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots and Boston Celtics and enjoyed swimming and playing basketball. Besides his wife Anne, he is survived by three children: Jen Cornwell of Warwick, Matt Devine of Washington, D.C. and Kasey Devine of Stoughton, MA; two brothers: Tim and John Devine of Florida and lifelong friends Karl and Debbie Robertson of Hartford, CT. He was the brother of the late Kathy Devine. A prayer service will be held at Carpenter-Jenks Funeral Home, 659 East Greenwich Avenue, West Warwick on Monday, July 25 at 7 PM. (07/24/11) Obituary of Arthur E. Clark, Jr. (With Photo & Flag) North Kingstown - Clark, Arthur E., Jr., 84, of North Kingstown, passed away Sunday at Philip Huliter Inpatient Center in Providence. He was born in Providence on January 2, 1927 to the late Arthur E. and Claire (San Souci) Clark and was the beloved nephew of the late J. Adolf and Anna (Clark) Johnson. Foremost in his many lifelong accomplishments, he was most proud of his family. He is survived by four children, Audrey R. Jordan and her husband Lester, David J. Clark and his wife Meryl, Jani L. Cushing and her husband Stanley and Jeffrey A. Clark; eight grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Robert J. Clark and companion Eleanor Welch. Mr. Clark was a United States World War II veteran serving in the 9th Air Force, Army Air Corps. He received his education from Carson Long Military Institute and Nichols College where he would later serve as Vice Chairman of the Nichols College Board of Trustees. He was president and owner of J. Adolf Johnson, Inc. Builders, of Johnson-Clark Realty Co. and was a past president of the Rhode Island Chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America. In the 1950\'s he was elected Majority Leader of the then twenty member Cranston City Council and he served on the Cranston Zoning Board of Review. As Chairman of the Cranston City Property Committee he was actively involved in the initial planning of finance for and construction of the city\'s second high school, Cranston West. His lifelong community service brought several distinct honors. As a Co-founder of the Cranston Jaycees he was the first recipient of the Rhode Island State Jaycees Distinguished Service Award and as a member of the East Greenwich Rotary Club he was named five times a Paul Harris Fellow. His civic involvement also included serving as president of the Executives Association of RI, and as a Trustee for the Rocky Hill School in East Greenwich and for Quidnessett Memorial Cemetery in North Kingstown. He also served on the governing boards of the Plum Beach Club; the Rhode Island Association for the Blind; the Rhode Island Council, Girl Scouts of America and, the South County Council, Navy League of USA. As a freemason he was a member of Doric Lodge #38 A.F. & A.M., now affiliated with Harmony Lodge #9 F. & A.M, Cranston; the Scottish Rite, Valley of Providence; the Tall Cedars of Lebanon and the Rhode Island Shriners. He presently was also a member of the Scandinavian Home \"Gamlas Vanners\" Society. He also was a member of the former Turks Head Club Round Table; the Squantum Association; the Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association; the American Legion, Auburn Post #20; the Greenwich Bay Power Squadron; the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Providence; the American Arbitration Association; the Netopian Club of Providence and a charter member of the Gator Creek Golf Club in Sarasota, FL. His passion for travel brought him around the world visiting seven continents and 132 countries. His funeral will be held on Thursday, July 28, 2011 at 11:00 in St. Luke’s Church, 99 Peirce Street, East Greenwich. (07/29/11) Joseph T. Gregson, Sr., 91 of Richmond, died Thursday July 28, 2011 at home. He was the husband of the late Martha (Henry) Gregson. He leaves behind his beloved Anita Medbery and her family, his children, Martha Germond and her husband Walter of Johnston, Joseph T. Gregson, Jr. and his wife Patricia of Warwick, Jack D. Gregson of Warwick and Charmane Di Nardi of Narragansett, 12 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and he was the brother of Ralph and the late Elmer Gregson. Born in Warwick, he was the son of the late Josiah T. and Ida B. Gregson-Smith, and step-son of Ralph Smith and Myrtle Gregson. Mr. Gregson was a veteran of the US Army serving in WWII receiving five bronze stars and a silver star for the “Battle of the Bulge” with the 101st Infantry. He had worked at Leesona for 35 years and was the owner of Gregson & Sons Janitorial Service of Warwick for 35 years, where he sponsored a Warwick little league team. He was a scout leader, Conimicut Troop 1, was a 50 year member of Harmony Lodge #9 F. & A. M. and was a member of the R. I. Shiners, Clown unit for 40 years known as “Jo Jo” the clown. He was a member of the Shields Post American Legion and VFW Post # 916 of Peace Dale. He loved sports and played football in High School, also on an amateur level and with the semi-pro Norwood Eagles before WWII broke out. (08/16/11) James “Jim” F. Preskar, 65, of Seacrest Drive, Westerly, unexpectedly passed away on Saturday afternoon, August 13, 2011 at the Westerly Hospital. He is survived and will be sadly missed by his beloved wife of almost 40 years, Tina (Salvatore) Preskar of Westerly, his son and daughter-in-law, James J. and Lauren Preskar of Madison, CT, his daughter and son-in-law, Barbara A. and Jason Corsello, six grandchildren, Brady, Landon and Ella Corsello and Owen, Cole and baby-boy-to-be Preskar, his brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Maryann Preskar, his brother-in-law and wife, Kenneth J. and Sidney Salvatore as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Jim was born on July 22, 1946 in Pittsburgh, PA, the son of the late Frank and Anna (Urich) Preskar. He was a graduate of North Catholic High School in Pittsburgh and Austin Peay University. Throughout his life, Mr. Preskar was a devoted husband, father, Papa, friend, colleague…and Steelers fan. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 at 10:00 am at St. Clare’s Church, 62 Crandall Avenue, Misquamicut. Burial will take place at River Bend Cemetery, Westerly. (08/19/11) Marie Louise Aline (Cyr) Fallon died in Orange, California on August 8, 2011 of natural causes. Marie was born in the Centerdale section of North Providence, Rhode Island in 1918 to Elphege and Yvonne Cyr. When she was five years old, the family moved to Block Island where she attended school until she graduated in 1935, Valedictorian of her class. In 1938, Marie married Raymond Leo Fallon, Chief Boatswain’s Mate (U.S. Coast Guard) at St. Andrew Catholic Church. Raymond served at the New Shoreham C.G. Station from 1936 until 1942. Raymond was a member of the race boat crew that won the East Coast Rowing Championship in 1938. In 1942 the family moved to the Boston District. In 1947 Marie Aline, Raymond and their daughter Jeanne relocated to Eureka, California where they lived until their son Joseph graduated from high school in 1971. At that time the family moved to St. Petersburg, Florida. Raymond died in 1994 and in 1999 Marie moved to Orange, California to be near her daughter, Sister Jeanne Fallon, CSJ. Marie is survived by her daughter, Sister Jeanne Fallon of California; her son, Joseph A. Fallon of Block Island; her daughter-in-law, Rachele Fallon of Block Island; her granddaughter, Jeannie Marie Fallon of Austin, Texas; her sister, Noella McMullen of Block Island; her brother, Robert Cyr of Maine and several nieces and nephews. A vigil service will be held at Sacred Heart Chapel, Sisters of St. Joseph, 480 S. Batavia St., Orange, CA on Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at 7pm. Funeral Mass of the Resurrection will be at St. Andrew Catholic Church, Chapel St., Block Island on Thursday, August 18, 2011 at 12 Noon, with interment following at the Island Cemetery. Born in North Kinstown, he was the son of the late Ruben King and Barbara (Hanna) Taylor and stepson of the late Ronald Taylor. He is survived by four children: Ricci Hartmann of Providence, Adrian Argento of Coventry, Eric Mederios of Fall River, MA and Taylor Precopio of Florida; seven grandchildren: Ricci, Janessa, Niesha and Dean Hartmann, Xavier Argento, Nathaniel and Tobin Mederios; one great grandson Connor; one sister: Cheryl Babbitt of Wakefield; one uncle: Richard Hanna of Bangor, PA; one great-aunt: Muriel Scudder of S. (08/23/11) Jennie H. Norton, of Hope Valley, Rhode Island, age 55, died from Cancer August 20, 2011 at home surrounded by family and friends. She was born in New York City in 1956, daughter of Julia (Powell) Work and Thomas A. Norton. She is survived by her parents and brother, Stephen Norton and five half-siblings. Jennie was previously married to Russell Correia of Portland, Maine. Raised in Essex, Connecticut, Jennie graduated from The Williams School, Colby-Sawyer College, and Barry University. She worked at UNUM in Portland, Maine in various roles. Most recently Jennie worked for Beacon Mutual Insurance. Jennie participated in many sports. She was active in 12 Step programs for over 17 years and gained inner strength, courage and the faith that all will be well from her work in the program. Relatives and friends are invited to a celebration of Jennie\'s life on Sunday, August 28 at Dunn\'s Corners Community Church at 3:00 PM (Westerly, RI).
