(08/23/15) Westgate, Herbert Adams, age 80 of North Kingstown, passed away with his family by his side Sunday at Kent Hospital, Warwick, RI. Born in Wickford, RI, he was the son of the late Earnest Emerson and the late Adeline Frances (Knowlton) Westgate. He was the beloved husband of Nancy Jean (Wheeler ) Westgate He served during Korean War in the Army from 1953 to 1956. He received several medals during that National Defense Service. His medals include; Good Conduct Medal, Korean Service Medal, UN Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Korean War Service Medal. He was a Supervisor, employed by Leesona Corporation for 15 years. He also spent many years employed by Electric Boat at Quonset Point where he was a Servo-Graph Operator. Just prior to his retirement, he was employed by Smithfield and Packing Farm in Burgaw, NC. He was an avid bowler at Kingston Bowl, North Kingstown and he also enjoyed golfing and sports. He enjoyed time with his family as he and his son could often be found working on cars together. Besides his wife; he is survived by his three children: Kevin Westgate, Denise Dufresne and her husband Raymond, Belinda Wolfe and her husband Shaun. He was the grandfather to his beloved grandsons Brian Adam Westgate and, Dustin Quinn Westgate. He is also survived by his brother Douglas Westgate and his wife Tracey. He was predeceased by his brothers Donald and Robert Westgate. All services will be private. (09/04/15) John R. \"Jack\" Vere, 57, of North Kingstown, passed away on Wednesday, September 2, 2015 at home. He was the husband of the late Toni Marie (Spivey) Vere. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late John A. Vere, Jr. and Edna M. (Plante) Vere. John was a Cab Driver for Airport Taxi in Warwick and previously was a Tool Maker for Etco Mfg. Co. He also served in The United States Air Force. Jack enjoyed fishing, boating, photography and NASCAR. He is survived by his sisters Cynthia J. Fonseca of Johnston, Lisa A. Chille and her husband Robert of North Kingstown and Kimberly J. Cavallaro and her husband David of Coventry; his step children Rondale Spivey and Jason Spivey, both of Providence and Laurie Ankoma of Gilroy, GA; his grandchildren Maddox Spivey-Populus, Jason Spivey Jr. and Noah Spearman; his nieces and nephews Mario Fonseca, Lynn Miller, Erin Chille, James Chille and Rose Cavallaro and his great nieces and nephews Mario, Calla, Jasper and Reese. (09/05/15) Martin, Maureen M. (Walton), 79, while surrounded by her family and in the peace of her home passed away on Saturday, September 5, 2015. For 57 wonderful years, she was married to Robert E. Martin of Narragansett. Born in Providence, RI; she was the daughter of the late Lewis H. and Catherine M. (Isaacson) Walton. Maureen was a strong willed person and certainly the matriarch of her family. Her maternal instincts and welcoming personality made any house guest feel a part of her family. Her determination and patriotism, allowed her to work shoulder to shoulder with military veteran (P.O.W. and M.I.A.) groups. With this determination she was able to bring her brother home after 36 years from being declared \"missing in action\" from the Vietnam War. She never gave up on anyone or anything. She was also very active with The Prout School and Monsignor Matthew F. Clark School in Wakefield, RI. Among other places of occupation, she favored her time working as the secretary for the Police Chief in the town of Narragansett. In her downtime she enjoyed gardening and crafts, but most of all being a mother. Besides her husband Robert, she is survived by four children: Linda Martin, Lauren Gardiner, Cathy Morrow and Robert Martin and his wife Lori; three grandchildren: Marissa Martin, Justin Morrow, Erin Morrow and step granddaughter Brittany Chaves, a niece and nephew and many other family and friends. She is predeceased by her brother Sgt. First Class Lewis Walton (K.I.A.) and two son-in-laws: Phil Gardiner and Bob Morrow. Her calling hours will be held at Carpenter- Jenks Funeral Home & Crematory, 659 East Greenwich Avenue, West Warwick, RI on Thursday, September 10 from 4 to 7 PM. Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Alice May (Legg) Hunold. Sharon was employed most recently with Volusia County Transit in Daytona Beach, FL and RIPTA as a bus operator. She resided in Daytona, FL for 25 years before moving back to Rhode Island. She is survived by her devoted friend Dianne M. Butler of Westerly, RI; two children: Daniel Thibodeau of CA and Julie Smith of Palm Coast, FL; five grandchildren: Jacob, John Claude and Daniel Thibodeau of CA, Ashley DiFormato of Palm Coast, FL and Britney Horrerra of Montgomery, AL; two great grandchildren: Mya N. Horrerra and Marlee Horrerra two sisters: Carol Hughes of Port Orange, FL and Deborah Reilly of S. Daytona, FL. (10/03/15) Evelyn R. (Ulewicz) Terranova, 96, of Clark Street, Westerly, wife of the late Joseph F. Terranova, passed away on Friday morning, October 2, 2015 at the Westerly Hospital. She was born in New Bedford, MA, the daughter of the late Alexander and Tekla (Janious) Ulewicz. The family moved to Taftville, CT where she attended elementary school and later the Norwich Free Academy. While attending school, she enjoyed playing baseball and basketball. After completing school, she was employed at Ponemah Mills where she did clerical work until her marriage to Joseph on July 24, 1943 in Taftville. They lived in Westerly and later Pawcatuck. During this period she worked as an assembler at Bostich and Yardney until her retirement. Evelyn enjoyed bingo, dancing and traveling. She and her husband traveled through the New England states and New York. They also enjoyed several trips to Europe including England, Portugal, Germany, France and on three occasions to Italy where they passed the whole summer in 1969. They also enjoyed twelve cruises to the Caribbean. Besides her husband and parents, she was pre-deceased by her brothers Isadore and Antone Ulewicz and her sisters Camilla Duff and Helen Puza. She is survived by many nephews and nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces and great-grandnephews and great-grandnieces. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, October 5, 2015 at 10:00 am at St. Pius X Church, 44 Elm Street, Westerly. There will be no procession from the funeral home. (10/04/15) Barbara J. Galli, 72, of Ledward Avenue, Westerly, passed away on Saturday evening, October 3, 2015 at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. She is survived by her cousin, Margaret Way of Westerly and her children, her cousin, James Blackwood Jr. of Westerly and his children and several cousins who live out of state. Miss Galli was born in Brooklyn, NY on October 18, 1942, the daughter of the late Eugene and Barbara (Negri) Galli. For many years, Barbara was a bookkeeper at McQuades Supermarket. She was an avid reader who enjoyed ceramics and knitting. Burial will take place at St. Sebastian Cemetery on Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at 11:00 am. Calling hours are respectfully omitted. (10/15/15) The Reverend Charles H. Downing, 75, Pastor Emeritus of Saint Joseph Church, West Warwick, died Tuesday, October 13, 2015. Norn in Providence, Rhode Island, son of the late Charles and Eleanor (O’Leary) Downing, he attended Assumption School and LaSalle Academy in Providence. In preparation for the priesthood, he studied at Our Lady of Providence Seminary in Warwick, Rhode Island, and at the American College in Louvain, Belgium. He was ordained a priest on June 26, 1965 in Louvain by Bishop Richard H. Ackerman. After a summer assignment at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Providence, Father Downing served as part-time assistant pastor at Saint Gregory the Great Church in Warwick and teacher at Our Lady of Providence Seminary in Warwick (1965-70). In June 1970 he became a full time teacher at the Seminary in Providence. In July 1989 Father Downing was appointed pastor of Saint Joseph Church in West Warwick where he served until his retirement on July 1, 2012 as Pastor Emeritus. In addition to his parochial duties, he served for two terms as Dean of Deanery V, Pawtuxet Valley and two terms on the Advisory Board for Ongoing Formation of Priests. During his years teaching at the seminary, he also assisted at various parishes in the South County area during the summer months. In 1990, he was appointed chaplain to Leona Circle #130, Daughters of Isabella. He was an avid Red Sox Fan and cat lover. Father Downing leaves two brothers, William T. Downing and his wife Rose of Cranston and Joseph D. Downing and his wife Joanne of Missouri City, Texas; two sisters, Carolyn A. Hall of The Villages, Florida and Miriam F. Gray and her husband Floyd of Canaan, New Hampshire, and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Kenneth R. Downing. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, October 18, 2015 from 5-8pm at St. Joseph Church, 854 Providence Street, West Warwick. A Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be offered for the repose of his soul on Monday, October 19, 2015 at 10:00 am at St. Joseph Church, West Warwick. (10/19/15) Neary, James S., 69, of Hope Valley, formerly of Warwick, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 19, surrounded by his family at the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center. He was the beloved husband of 45 years of Mary Ann (O’Neil) Neary; cherished father of Lindsay Neary Vallely of Cumberland, and Bridget Neary Lawton of Hope Valley; father-in-law to Paul Vallely and Jason Lawton. He was the adored and proud papa to Madison, Mackenzie and Abigail Vallely and Gracyn, Georgia, Garrett, Genevieve and Griffin Lawton. Born in Bridgeport, CT, he was the son of the late Charles F. Neary and Elizabeth (Harvey) Neary. He was the brother of the late Kathleen Elizabeth Neary. He was a graduate of Notre Dame High School and Villanova University. He worked at Fleet Bank, was the former owner of Williams Corner Dodge and retired as the Vice President of Domestic Bank in Cranston. Jim was a proud Irishman who enjoyed golfing and was an avid Patriots and Red Sox fan. He was deeply involved in Apponaug Girls Softball and Warwick Soccer Association for many years coaching most of his daughters’ teams throughout the years. He is certain to be remembered by many an umpire and referee for his coaching both on and off the field. His most treasured times were spent with his adored family and grandchildren. Papa Jim was his grandchildren’s biggest fan. He enjoyed every minute of cheering them on at all of their sports. They were his pride and joy. He was so happy to spend his final six months in his new home with Mary Ann, Bridget and Jason and the five G’s. Heald. Born in Providence, a daughter of the late Arthur and Dorothy (Lamonthe) Desautels. Mrs. Heald was a manager at several retail stores before retiring. Besides her husband she leaves her children, Harry Heald of Columbus, OH, Erik Heald of North Kingstown, Christine Marzella of West Greenwich, and Cheryl Nelson of Fall River, MA; three brothers, Arthur Desautels of Hope, Michael Desautels and Dennis Desautels both of West Warwick, a sister, Janice Reilly in Wisconsin and 8 grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Roney Desautels. (11/09/15) Green, Ruth H., 101, passed away Monday, November 9, 2015 at South Bay Manor of South Kingstown, RI. Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Prescott and Hazel (Thurston) Hilton. She married Hervey E. Green in 1950, with whom she was married to for 61 wonderful years, before he passed away in 2011. They lived together in Warwick for 61 years, and were life-long summer residents of Jefferson, ME. As a graduate of Edgewood Secretarial School, Mrs. Green was employed as a secretary by Ostby & Barton Jewelry Manufacturing and then by Edwards & Angell Law Firm. After retiring in 1950, she became a full-time homemaker to her husband and son. Mrs. Green was a member of the Matthewson Street United Methodist Church in Providence, the RI Society of Mayflower Descendants, and the RI Geneological Society. She is survived by one son, Richard H. Green and his wife Linda of South Kingstown, RI and was the beloved grandmother to Kayleigh S. Wooler and Collin H. Green. She was the sister of Sara \"Sally\" Hilton and Mary Elizabeth Ostiguy both of North Kingstown, RI. She was predeceased by her sister, Martha Luther. A private graveside service will be held in Swan Point Cemetery, Blackstone Boulevard, Providence, with burial to follow. (12/14/15) O’Neil, Elizabeth G. (Grandbois), 93, of Matunuck, passed away Saturday, Dec. 12, 2015 at Miriam Hospital. She was the wife of the late William F. O’Neil, Jr. Born in Meriden, CT, a daughter of the late Homer and Elizabeth (Clark) Grandbois, she lived in Orange and Branford, CT for many years before moving to Matunuck thirteen years ago. Mrs. O’Neil was a Registered Nurse graduating from St. Raphael Nursing School in New Haven, CT in 1943. She had a long nursing career in public health and in pediatrics before retiring in 1985. She was a volunteer with Meals On Wheels and Seniors Helping Others. She is survived by two sons, William F. O’Neil, III (Jeanne Dube) of Providence and John P. O’Neil of Indianapolis, IN; two daughters, Kathleen A. Westervelt of Matunuck and Joyce M. Messier (Donald) of Kennebunk, ME; seven grandchildren and a great grandson. She was the mother of the late Patricia Begina (Thomas) and Maureen O’Neil, sister of the late Joan G. Kiernan and grandmother of the late Daniel P. O’Neil. (01/22/16) Arline F. (Maynard) Prior, 79, of Exeter and Narragansett, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at South County Hospital surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of James H. Prior Jr. for 59 years. Born December 17, 1936 in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Alfred A. and Marion V. (Walsh) Maynard. She was preceded in death by a son, James H. Prior III. Besides her husband, she is survived by her children; Alison Sfreddo (David) of Montclair, Virginia, Colleen Moffitt (Charles) of Wakefield, Richard Prior (Claudia) of East Greenwich and Robert Prior (Gigi) of Lexington Park, Maryland and eight grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, the Reverend Richard C. Maynard of Warwick. She was the sister of the late Reverend Robert J. Maynard. Arline was a Registered Nurse and worked at the South County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center where she retired after 20 years. An antique enthusiast, Arline loved to decorate and had a love of Early American art and furniture. A Mass of Christian Burial will be concelebrated on Monday, January 25, 2016 at 10:00am at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 864 Point Judith Road, Narragansett. (02/25/16) Vandusen, Betty C. (Roland), 94, beloved wife of Verne L. Vandusen, entered into God’s eternal care on February 25, 2016 at South County Hospital in South Kingstown, RI. She was born in Baltimore, MD to the late George Z. and Mamie M. (Spicer) Roland. She is survived by two sons: Rob S. Vandusen (his wife Annette) of Colorado Springs, CO and Larry Vandusen (his wife Joyce) of Exeter, RI; two grandchildren: David Vandusen and Susan (Vandusen) Percy and six great grandchildren. She is predeceased by her five older siblings: Spicer Roland, Charles Roland, Mary A. Quandt, Edythe Raabe and Ruth King. Her funeral service will be held at 7 PM on Thursday, March 3 at Quidnessett Baptist Church, 6356 Post Road, North Kingstown, RI with visitation from 6-7 PM prior to the service at the church. (04/03/16) Thomas P. King, 65, of Jupiter, FL died unexpectedly on Thursday, March 31st. He was born in Providence, the son of the late Francis King and Margaret King Cavanagh. Loving husband of the late Joan Doucette King and father to Sean King of Temecula, CA; Mikaela Reyes of Matunuck and Laura King of Providence, Tom was blessed with 6 grandchildren; Taylor, Hunter, Chloe, Tomas, Alexandra and Baby West. Survivors include his brother Kernan King and sister Kathleen King. Tom discovered his deep interest and love of Art early on as a student of Gino Conti, an accomplished RISD artist. He pursued his passion, graduating from URI and the MFA program at RISD. His enthusiasm for dimensional art evolved during his Independent Study Program at the Whitney Museum in NY. Tom taught art in Plymouth, MA and Scituate, RI and was an Adjunct Professor at RI College. His other passions included family, surfing, cycling, and above all….he was a lover of all things Matunuck!
